MOOCs market size have risen rapidly since they provide flexible and inexpensive ways for students around the world to gain access to high-quality education.


However, MOOCs face a key flaw that has earned low completion rates. Based on research from ResearchGate shows that only 5% to 15% of students who start a MOOC actually finish it. Therefore, Makey aims to offer a collaborative and supportive education environment.

User Research

I conducted a survey and interviews with 5 e-learners to have a deep understanding of the journey of taking self-paced online courses.

Affinity Mapping

Based on user research, I created an affinity map to organize insights about why people choose to take online classes and what blockers people have to complete courses. This helped me better understand users' needs and identify pain points.


Here’s main insight form user research.

People mostly take self-online classes for thier career.

People find difficult to be constantly motivated.

People tend to prioritize their daily life than online classes.

How might we help self-paced online learners stay motivated to complete their courses within their timeline by increasing accountability and providing more interaction?

Solutions

Goal Setting

Users can set their own timelines on the courses that they are enrolled in to provide motivation and progress tracking through this learning path. Also, user can create their daily goals, receiving reminders to keep them on track.

Gamified Progress Tracking

To encourage learner engagement and motivation, the platform provides badges, leaderboards, and progress bars as gamification elements, allowing them to share on SNS.

Community Engagement

Users can share information of the courses or fields they are interested in and find accountability partners with others taking the same courses.
